Experts at Tulix share their expertise on ensuring that online content always gets to the viewer.

Sounds simple, but the key thing you need to do when delivering content online is make sure the content gets delivered. If you want to deliver content on Roku or broadcast from your owned and operated properties, you need a mechanism to deliver streams to viewers. Roku doesn't provide CDN services and likely you don't have the servers and network in place to be your own CDN. That's where we come in.

MultiCDN

Let's talk multi-CDN. A good multi-CDN strategy will ensure your video always get to the viewer. Slow video loading is one of the biggest causes of viewer abandonment. Using a multi-CDN strategy ensures you have the best path and total redundancy for content delivery.

At Tulix, we have our own CDN, TulixCDN. We run our own data centre and have direct control over the entire CDN infrastructure. What a multi-CDN strategy does is get a second or a third CDN to provide redundancy so you can be sure that your content will not experience brown-outs. The Tulix MultiCDN is a new, fully managed service we created to meet the varying needs of client requirements that has developed over many years. So what do you need to know about this?

Let's talk architecture. Many CDNs were not created to handle video, but were designed for static content. We designed ours from the ground up to handle live video. We also work with other CDNs who take the same approach with their customer's content. We have agreements with CenturyLink and Stackpath plus we can also support other CDNs if you already have contracts in place.

Previously to support a multi-CDN architecture you may have had to spend quite a lot of time configuring this. With Tulix, we have automated and managed services to ensure you are building a sustainable multi-CDN approach. Our multi-CDN architecture is built with nodes, to create a highly optimised delivery. Each node can be a CDN by itself, depending on the delivery requirements.

Let's talk availability. Live streaming needs to be immediately delivered from source to viewer - without caching, progressive download or interruptions between origin and destination. We use a centralised distribution system for our architecture. This unique architecture was designed to build a highly scalable and global CDN optimised for live video delivery. As well, our design provides the lowest CPU, memory and drive subsystem utilisations we had ever witnessed.

Our route-optimisation system is specifically tuned to find the fastest and highest quality path to the viewer, ensuring rapid loading times worldwide. We operate our CDN and cloud services from our primary data centres in Atlanta, where our 10, 40 and 100 Gbps server architecture have direct access to all major internet backbones. We have direct control over the entire CDN infrastructure (unlike other CDNs who rent space in data centres). Our staff is on site to provide near-instant support.

Let's talk redundancy. Face it, more and more video is being delivered online every day. While this may be good news for your business, it can be bad news for your network health. Being able to control which CDN should handle each and every stream provides optimum service. Think of it as having a diversified delivery policy, much like an investment portfolio. Buying only one stock would be foolhardy because the fluctuations may really take a chunk out of your net worth, using only one CDN open's you up to avoidable risk.

Let's talk QoS. Congestion will cause buffering and lower levels of quality. The Internet is a bursty place: Things happen and all of a sudden the data rate being delivered drops dramatically. A key reason to go for a multi-CDN strategy is to optimise the ability for your best connection to deliver content. CDNs may not perform consistently across all regions, which is the rationale behind using more than one.

We offer controls to make choices based on SLA's, cost or performance. We enable you to balance loads based on real-time information about how your various CDNs are handling traffic requests. We provide monitoring and service level agreements, ensuring you're up and running 99.998% of the time (99.999% network availability and 99.5% application availability) with a team of experts dedicated to supporting each customer.

Let's talk failover. We use a non-DNS based management approach. DNS lookup can be slow to disconnect and reconnect if availability fails. Our technology automatically identifies and load balances for the best services. As well, we can control failover based on location, price or capacity.

Let's talk money. Working with multiple vendors can create more paperwork. We can manage this by providing one single bill to simplify things and provide the best market price. We have transparent pricing and want to make sure there is no sticker shock when it comes to your monthly bill.

Speaking of bills, how do you anticipate your CDN costs? Numbers can be deceiving when it comes to planning for bandwidth traffic. Thirty viewers watching a 1Mbps stream for one month non-stop consumes the same bandwidth as 22,000 people watching the same stream for an hour. We work with our customers to identify how their audience will view content so we can deliver the best streaming architecture for whatever the use case requires - whether it's a high traffic spike or consistent viewer numbers throughout the course of a month.

Let's talk live. Tulix has deep experience delivering live content. The TulixCDN was designed for live content delivery. In recent tests, we achieved load times of one second from as far away as Pakistan. Our service is built to provide the best streaming experience for both live and VoD content. It consists of multiple load balancers and reverse proxy servers, which are built and tuned for serving specific objects like TS files, playlists, etc. We can also fine-tune delivery based on customer requirements of importance, efficiency, latency, and scalability.

Let's talk scale. Scale up or down, we can handle it. We provide services to clients worldwide.

We operate our CDN and cloud services from our primary data centres in Atlanta, where we have direct access to all major Internet backbones. We virtualise our server configuration, which provides us with dynamic capability able to provide up to 200 channels per virtual machine, or as much as 2,000 live channels, or 10 VM configurations per server. We do redundant set-up to ensure we maintain optimum traffic pathways for our customers.

Let's talk video files. We often advise customers on how to get the best encoding and video packaging. Encoding can be complicated. We can help identify how to acquire signals and ingest any source, from RTMP, HLS, MPEG-TS, RTSP, MMS and more, then encode and transcode to the right formats which work with all the devices you want to support. We can also offer encoding in a private cloud, providing significant cost savings over using some of the better known public clouds.

Let's talk security. We support all major DRM's in our multi-CDN environment. DRM is often a requirement for content licences, especially top tier content. We also support AES 128 encryption too.

Let's talk OTT. Want OTT services like DVR, customer management, 24/7 content playout and shopping carts? We do this all in a multi-CDN environment.
DVR. Viewers can use our cloud based DVR to record live programming, and then return to watch later. nDVRs allow viewers to use DVR features on live content and time-shift their viewing. This is great for when live content viewing gets interrupted and you want to go back a few minutes to see what you missed. nDVR generally store one hour of content and DVR storage can be unlimited, however most broadcasters prefer 48 or 72 hours, or up to seven days of content storage for viewers.

24/7 content playout. 24/7 live linear broadcasting is a mix of live and pre-recorded content. Broadcasters can upload a library of video and use the VoD scheduler to program playback for a 24x7 stream. Our live switching control enables us to interrupt the scheduled on-demand content and switch playout to a live event stream - for breaking news, or live event coverage at any time during your playout schedule.

Customer management. We support advertising, subscription and transactional monetisation options. Ad-supported content works well for content that users would otherwise not be willing to pay for directly. Other broadcasters prefer to create either a subscription or a transactional, pay-per-view service.

CRM. To manage the various monetisation models Tulix has a CRM back-office system which our customers can connect to, to register and bill their viewers. The billing management section can process credit cards or even cash payments and enable custom promotional discount offers, for new customers, resellers or agents. The reporting tool will show sales revenue reports, growth and monthly churn. We can even handle all customer billing and account management if needed.

Let's talk. Planning for capacity is serious business. It may be the most important technical choice you'll make, because if your content can't get to your customers, nothing else matters. At Tulix, we don't just talk about CDN, we deliver. We are a full-service company, working with our customers to create the customer solutions they need for their specific uses. We'd be happy to speak with you about your current CDN strategy and discuss areas where we may be able to help.
